Addiction treatment

This blog is my daily journey through the process of my recovery and as of late I continue to find that more and more people are seeking me out in order to find information in relation to getting help for themselves or for a loved one.

I am an addict in the process of recovery.

At the end of my active addiction I was a total a complete mess and my life was going no where…FAST. I wasted much of my youth stuck in the grips and just couldn’t seem to find a way out of the accompanying insanity that is the trademark of an active addiction.

When I finally hit my very last bottom and became willing to do whatever was necessary in order to stop using, begin the process of recovery and reclaim my life; I was fortunate enough to have resources available to me in order to take the initial steps in getting clean. Through continued maintenance I have been blessed enough to continue to stay clean for over two years now.

I initially just wanted to keep my focus on myself and what I go through and do in my daily life, but apparently I have the capacity to offer a bit more then that. Sometimes I take for granted how easy it was for me to seek out the help that I needed. I had prior experience in relation to what service were available to me, so the process of finding help was not a difficult one.

I was fortunate…but for others this is not their story.

I see each and every day of my life that many people do not know how to find the help they may need or how to help someone who might require drug treatment for a substance abuse problem. Most people with an addiction problem just don’t have the capacity to help themselves because using substances of any kind often become a 24 hour job, which leaves little or no room for finding a solution to the problem.

Without the proper information, finding a way to treat the many facets of an addiction can become a major obstacle in initially getting off of a substance of abuse. There are many different facets in the process of drug rehabilitation that one must be aware of in order to effective begin the recovery process.

An addiction of any kind has the capacity to take on many different disguises and manifests differently within each person. There is no one “way” that a person gets and stays clean. Often someone trys one method of treatment and finds no relief, only to never look any further to discover all of the options that are available.

Different strokes…for different folks.

For some a long or short term inpatient drug rehab may be the solution and for others choosing between a detox, outpatient or cognitive behavior therapy might be the factor that makes the difference in how successful the recovery process potentially can be.

I suffered from a nasty opiate addiction to heroin, so for me it was necessary to have proper medical detox before I could move onto the next phase of my recovery. But someone that has an addiction to a substance that may not necessary qualify for a detox of sorts, may not know that other methods are available.

I know how important it is to remember that many abuse issues that surround the use of drugs all have the common thread of addiction weaved through it, but that different people respond differently to the many types of treatment.

I know that for me and many others that simply an addiction is a life or death issue. Millions of people worldwide die each day and will continue to die because they are not aware of the help that is available to them if they seek it out.

From where I live i am well informed of the many services that can provide the information one may seek in regards to finding help. But as of late i have been getting many inquiries from people that are not in my general vicinity, so I have had to explore some of the services that offer treatment options through out the world.

A site that I refer to regularly is 1-800NoDrugs , it is a non-profit drug referral service that that provides the necessary information in relation to the different types of drug addictions, as well as the many types of services available for a person seeking help. It is a completely free service and has people on staff 24 hours a day in order to help find the proper treatment for someone seeking help for their problem.

A person with an addiction of any sorts is a person that is not well… a person that needs help. There are many stereotypes attached to the label of addict, which at times makes it difficult to admit to the need for help as well as finding help. There is a solution that can work, but only if the information is properly sought out…..no one else needs to die from an addiction, especially those who are willing to get the help that they need.

  1. You’re so right. There are so many people out there with addictions that don’t know what treatments are available to them or how to get help. Even loved ones of addicts may not know how to appropriately help their loved ones because they don’t understand the depths of addictions. It’s a deep, troublesome, and difficult topic to understand–something that you can only relate to if you’ve felt it. I admire your willingness to be open and honest about your recovery, and I think that it will continue to help those in need of help and information to get said help.

One of my greatest resources has been the A&E television show, Intervention. It convinces the addict that they’re doing a documentary and showcases the trials and tribulations of their addiction and their everyday life. At the end, they show the evidence to the addict and offer them a choice. They can go through the steps with their intervention team at the request of their loved ones, or they can continue down their path of destruction. It’s painful to watch, but it really offers insight into the disorder of all kinds of addiction–especially if you’ve never gone through it. If you have, it offers a reminder of what you went through and the pain it took you to get there. You should check it out if you haven’t already: http://www.aetv.com/intervention. The new series premiers on December 3rd at 9pm. I am working to support this because, like you, I want to be able to help those that are gripped with the result of addiction.

    Charlotte,
Thank you so much for your insight and encouragement. I too have watched the show intervention and although it is a bit graphic, it does show the desperation that many addict are stuck in.
    Thank you….
