The Canyon

As many of you already know, I am an addict in the process of recovery. I know how fortunate I am in relation to the statistics that concern the failure rate among addicts that seek recovery. I took me many years and a very rough road in order to find relief and the freedom from my 12 year addiction. It wasn’t easy, there were times when I just wanted to give up completely and then there were the moments of hope that showed the glimmers of the road ahead if I could just stop using.

The solution that was offered to me came from the inner willingness I had to get clean and the opportunity to abstain from substances, the lifestyle and the danger of my own thinking was through a drug rehab. I don’t believe just going to rehab was the defining factor of why I stayed clean, but it was part of the reason of how I originally got clean.

There are a lot of misconceived notions about what addiction really is and the methods of treatment at most offer a partial type of solution to the underlying problem…sort of like putting a band-aid on cancer.

I myself am a firm believer that addiction is a disease of body, mind and spirit that has the capacity to be put into a state of remission through various maintenance of self. I am involved in 12 step programs that help me to keep my focus on where I am and where I am going through the process of helping other addicts maintain their recovery. I don’t think that there is one answer to addiction, but I am partial to the one that has worked so well for me up until this point in time.

I came across a drug treatment center located in Santa Monica Mountains in Malibu California called The Canyon. The program they offer introduces those in treatment an opportunity to become familiar with the 12-step recovery process that is and continues to be the very foundation of my new way of life.

They provide a Dual Diagnosis rehab that addresses the needs of other co-occurring conditions that more often then not accompany an addiction of any kind. They also provide this within their Alcohol rehab, which historically has shown that those addicted to alcohol tend to have other co-occurring conditions as a result of the abuse. They offer a medically supervised detoxification process for those that may need that particular type of treatment before embarking on the journey of recovery. There focus is based in the healing approach to an addiction, offering a sanctuary that allows an opportunity for those in it’s treatment center to discover a greater awareness and insight to the healing aspects that can come about when starting upon the road of recovery. Individuals are offered the necessary tools to begin to learn the daily living and coping skills to deal with the reality of their addiction.
